Help to Buy redemption
Introduction

If you bought your home with a Help to Buy equity loan, you’ll eventually need to repay it — this is called redemption. Here’s how the process works.

Step 1: Decide How to Repay
• You can repay when remortgaging, selling, or just paying off the loan directly.
Step 2: Get a Valuation
• An independent RICS surveyor must value your property (the loan is based on property value, not the original loan amount).
Step 3: Apply to Redeem
• Submit your valuation and redemption request to Homes England (or their administrators).
Step 4: Instruct a Conveyancer
• Your conveyancer handles the legal paperwork, liaises with Homes England, and ensures the loan is redeemed correctly.
Step 5: Completion
• Once funds are transferred, the Help to Buy charge is removed from the Land Registry.
